Two years ago, Kalinka was abandoned by her previous owners. Now, the cat from Gassum can proudly claim the world champion title in the Domestic Shorthair category. It’s a tale that transcends the ordinary, turning a stray feline into a global sensation.
At first glance, she might seem like an ordinary cat lounging on a table in a home in Gassum, just north of Randers. However, Kalinka is anything but ordinary. The three-year-old female cat was recently crowned the world champion in the Domestic Shorthair category at the World Championship in Strasbourg, France.
“It’s surreal. We hadn’t expected that when we went there,” says Mette Andersen, the family’s daughter.”
Rewind the clock just two years, and hardly anyone would have predicted that this little homeless wildcat would become a world champion in anything.
“She’s a bit princess-like. It’s like a fairy tale, but I’m not sure if she’s the ugly duckling or the princess on the pea,” remarks Annette Keldberg Andersen.
Kalinka’s journey into the spotlight began far from glamorous.
From Dumpster to Stardom
A year ago, they discovered Kalinka in a vacation home area, abandoned by her previous owners. There, she survived by catching mice and eating whatever people had discarded in the trash. Some neighbors complained about the stray cat, prompting the installation of a cat trap.
Kalinka walked into the trap one day, but her reaction was atypical.
“Instead of getting scared and aggressive, as most wildcats would, she sat quietly in the trap. She almost seemed apologetic for herself,” says Annette Keldberg Andersen.”
They brought Kalinka to MinVenKatten, a shelter that cares for and rehomes homeless cats.
Annette Keldberg Andersen was drawn to Kalinka’s calm temperament when she first met her—a fateful day she describes as the luckiest in the cat’s life.
The Fairy Tale Unfolds
It was at a cat show that Annette Keldberg Andersen spotted Kalinka. A staff member from the shelter had brought the cat to the exhibition because they hadn’t been able to find her owner.
On that day, Annette was at the show with one of her Maine Coon pedigree cats, which she had been showcasing for years. Suddenly, she noticed Kalinka.
“She just sat there, completely calm. She seemed loving and very approachable. I fell for her immediately,” says Annette Keldberg Andersen”.
Without hesitation, she decided Kalinka would come home with her and promptly paid the shelter 1000 kroner ($150) for the adoption. The striped cat moved into the warmhearted Andersen family home a week later, beginning a new cat life.
Kalinka now relishes life in the haven of the Andersen family. She loves to cuddle, and her nickname is Kalinka Binka.
Today, Kalinka has become an indispensable part of the family in their small East Jutland home.
“Kalinka means everything; she’s a real cuddlebug. Her previous owner let her down, so she has unlimited love for us, and it’s reciprocated,” says Annette Keldberg Andersen.
I think everyone in France has kissed my cat,” says the proud owner of a world champion.
From Trash to Showbiz
Annette and her daughter have turned attending cat shows into a hobby, and Kalinka has amassed many medals that adorn their home’s walls.
Time and again, the seasoned show cat impresses the judges. It was evident at the World Championship in Strasbourg, where she clinched the title.
In Strasbourg, the East Jutland house cat charmed them all.
“When the judges assess her, you can feel she’s on. She rubs against them and wants to be lifted and looked at. The judges and everyone else present couldn’t resist her sweet face. I think everyone in France has kissed my cat,” says the proud owner of a world champion.
Annette’s daughter, Mette, was present in Strasbourg, describing the experience as surreal, as they hadn’t expected Kalinka to win.
The Broader Issue of Abandoned Cats
However, amidst the glitz and glamour of Kalinka’s triumph, it’s crucial to address the broader issue of abandoned cats.
We must remember that Kalinka’s story is unique. Unfortunately, millions of homeless cats have a fate that does not end so happily.
Abandonment is a widespread and severe problem, with numerous cats enduring hardship on the streets.
The consequences are heartbreaking for the animals and pose challenges for communities dealing with the impact of stray populations.
MinVenKatten, the shelter that rescued Kalinka, is just one of many organizations working tirelessly to provide a lifeline for abandoned cats.
These shelters play a vital role in rescuing, caring for, and rehoming cats without a home.
Annette Keldberg Andersen emphasizes the emotional toll the issue takes on her when she hears about cats sharing Kalinka’s fate. The act of abandoning a cat in the wild bewilders this cat owner from Gassum.
“It touches me. It’s not okay to get a cat if you’re not planning to take care of it. It’s strange to drive out into the woods and leave it there. People should refrain from doing that,” says Annette Keldberg Andersen.
She hopes that people who regret getting a cat will at least surrender it to a shelter like MinVenKatten, which works to match the cats they receive with the perfect family.
In Gassum, they are grateful that Kalinka ended up in their family.
“Somewhat harshly, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and that certainly seems to be the case here,” says Annette Keldberg Andersen.
Soon, Kalinka will charm a panel of judges with her cat paws again. The reigning world champion will participate in the Jutland Cat Club’s exhibition in Hedensted. There, organizers and fellow participants will celebrate her world title.
